Rescuers from Kings Harvest Pet Rescue No Kill Shelter in Iowa were appalled by what they encountered when they discovered a dog left to freeze in the cold.
It appears that her owner was seen dumping her on the street near the old shelter building before driving away.
It’s speculated that the owner may have mistakenly believed that the shelter was still operating at that location, hoping that she would receive immediate assistance there.
However, the building had been unoccupied for several months. Rescuers reviewed CCTV footage and observed the heartbreaking scene of the dog following her owner to her kennel before being abandoned.
They also noticed that she was limping, which added to the distress of the situation. After the owner departed, a Good Samaritan spotted the distressed pup and contacted authorities for help.
The Iowa rescuers who arrived at the scene were horrified by what they witnessed. Rise appeared to be severely neglected.
Rise was emaciated and had a limp, prompting the rescuers to transport her quickly to the shelter, where she could receive the urgent care she desperately needed.
A Path to Recovery: Medical Treatment and Hope
Once safe at the shelter, Rise received immediate medical treatment and began her journey to recovery.
Fortunately, she did not have any serious underlying health issues, suggesting that her healing process would be relatively swift.
However, she will still require vaccinations before she can be made available for adoption or placed in a foster home.
Nevertheless, her rescuers are already exploring her options and making every effort to find foster parents who will provide her with the love and care she needs until she finds her forever family.
A Call for Compassion: Preventing Abandonment
The rescuers acknowledge that they do not know the full circumstances of the owner’s decision. While his actions were undeniably wrong, it’s possible he felt he had no other option.
However, they emphasize that there are more responsible ways to relinquish a pet. If he was unable to care for his dog, the least he could have done was surrender her directly to the shelter.
