The Pain of Rejection: A Dog’s Heartbreak
There’s arguably no greater pain for a dog than to be rejected by its family.
Imagine this: you’ve spent your entire life in a comfortable home, surrounded by people who you believe love you, and then, suddenly, it all vanishes.
Not only do you lose everything you know, but your days transform into a terrifying ordeal the moment your paws touch the cold, unfamiliar asphalt, marking the beginning of a life as a stray.
This is precisely the fate that befell Lucy, a senior Labrador whose world became a constant struggle to avoid danger and wary humans. She was filled with fear, but even more so, she was heartbroken… until a kind individual decided to intervene.
A Chance Encounter: Lane’s Determination to Help
One day, Lane Bounds, a woman from Mississippi, was leaving her gym when she spotted Lucy in the parking lot. She immediately called out to her in a friendly tone, but Lucy fled.
A few days later, the same scenario repeated itself. This time, Lucy was resting near a local bank, but her past trauma prevented her from trusting Lane.
“Leaving the gym, I noticed an old stray in the parking lot. Days later, I found her sleeping in the bushes at a local bank,” Lane recounted in her post titled “Lucy’s story.”
Driven by a strong desire to help the vulnerable dog, Lane immediately took action. She posted inquiries about Lucy, hoping to find her owners. In the meantime, she set humane traps baited with food near where Lucy was seen, but all her efforts proved futile. This intelligent Labrador was simply too wary and skittish.
“I made posts looking for her owners with no luck. She outsmarted all traps, but I just knew I had to help her,” Lane wrote.
Then, Lane devised a new strategy. One afternoon, she brought her own dog, Delta, to the area, hoping that Delta’s presence would attract Lucy’s attention. And, it worked!
Lucy finally found herself interacting with Delta in front of Lane’s car. Over the next few days, she gradually allowed Lane to feed her from her hand, and she even ventured into her car.
The rest, as they say, is history!
Lane took Lucy home, where her entire family welcomed the dog with open arms. When they took Lucy to the veterinarian for a checkup, Lane discovered that Lucy had indeed had a family before.
She contacted them, explaining the situation, but Lucy’s family informed her that they no longer wanted her. They expressed no interest in reuniting with her, which only strengthened Lane’s resolve to care for her.
Lane decided to foster Lucy, ensuring that the gentle and laid-back Labrador received everything she needed for a full recovery.
A Remarkable Transformation: Lucy Finds Her Place
It was truly rewarding to witness Lucy’s incredible transformation in such a short period. She quickly warmed up to the entire family and became everyone’s beloved companion.
Lucy adored her new “mom” and “dad,” Delta, and her human siblings. She relished cozy naps, cuddles, and outdoor adventures. She proved to be the perfect companion, which ultimately led to an inevitable outcome: Lucy became a “foster fail”!
“After over a week of trying to trap and rescue this girl, and now spending two months fostering her with amazing potential offers for her betterment, I just could not imagine Lady Lucy being anywhere else than here with us,” Lane shared on Facebook.
A Happy Ending: A Life Filled with Love
Today, this sweet and furry girl is happier than ever. Lane and her family continue to provide unwavering love and support, helping Lucy overcome the trauma of her past, and Lucy reciprocates with her affectionate and wonderful personality.
“Every day we try to give her a life and love that helps heal whatever went wrong in her past, and I’m still not sure how we ever lived without each other. Lu is now a healthy 75+ pounds and by far, the most loyal creature I’ve ever met,” Lucy’s “mom” added.
After enduring countless hardships and many sleepless nights on the streets of Mississippi, Lucy finally has her own forever home – the perfect place for her.
