A Rescuer’s Quest: Following a White Shepherd
As dedicated dog rescuers, Alice and Jeff, a couple from Macon, Mississippi, never know where their next mission will lead them.
They have been performing this vital work for quite some time and have encountered many surprising situations along the way. However, when Jeff’s friend shared information about a white Shepherd dog he had seen during his logging trip, their curiosity was immediately piqued.
They knew the road he described traversed through dense woods, surrounded by nothing but gravel roads and untamed wilderness. Driven by a sense of urgency, the couple embarked on their rescue mission without delay!
A Silent Plea: The Dog’s Urgent Request
The Mississippi couple, who are the founders of Southern Pup rescue, drove through the woods until they finally spotted a white shape moving along the roadside. As they approached, they confirmed that it was indeed the dog their friend had mentioned.
They promptly pulled over and attempted to gain her trust. To their surprise, this proved to be much easier than they had anticipated!
This strikingly beautiful pooch was exceptionally friendly. She seemed to recognize the couple’s good intentions and immediately transformed into a cuddle bug, clearly hoping they would rescue her.
As Alice petted her, she noticed the dog’s prominent mammary glands and correctly assumed that she was a nursing mother who had been abandoned in the area with her litter. However, despite thoroughly searching the surrounding woods, the couple found no trace of her puppies.
Then, to their astonishment, the mama dog took the initiative!
She slowly began to walk away, seemingly urging Alice and Jeff to follow her. She would walk a short distance and then turn around to ensure the couple was still following her.
This continued for a mile, leaving her rescuers wondering if she was leading them to her puppies or perhaps trying to guide them to her own home.
“It’s been a mile. I don’t know if she’s heading home. There’s nothing but gravel roads,” Alice shared in a Facebook video, expressing her uncertainty.
Then, all of a sudden, the dog turned sharply toward a ditch, leaving the couple utterly shocked by what they discovered!
An Astonishing Revelation: The Puppies in the Ditch
It was both a beautiful and heartbreaking surprise. Right there, nestled in the ditch, were nine newborn puppies, huddled together for warmth and comfort.
“She turns to the ditch and I look over, and her nine fat babies are in just a few feet off the road in a ditch that within 45 minutes to an hour would have been filling up with water when a storm was coming through,” Alice recounted to GeoBeats Animals, emphasizing the imminent danger the puppies had been in.
Thanks to their mother’s unwavering determination, they were found just moments before a major storm. And now, they were about to be rescued.
Alice and Jeff carefully gathered up the mama dog, now named Marathon (in honor of her brave journey), and her nine puppies and placed them safely in their car. After a long drive back home, they created a comfortable nursing area for Marathon, where she could feed and care for her babies in safety.
It was truly a miracle, knowing that the entire family had been given a new chance at life. The thought of what might have happened if they had remained trapped in that ditch was chilling.
Despite having lived in the woods for an unknown period, the mama dog adapted to her new indoor environment almost instantly! She couldn’t conceal the joy on her face, knowing that she and her puppies were finally safe and secure.
A Bright Future: A Family’s Second Chance
For the time being, Marathon and her puppies will remain in the care of Alice and Jeff. After receiving the necessary care and attention, all of the dogs will become available for adoption, giving them the opportunity to find loving forever homes.
But first, everyone is eager to see what these adorable little furballs will grow into!
