The life journey of a sweet and resilient deaf dog named Joy has been marked by significant challenges. When her former owners made the heartless decision to abandon her at an already overcrowded animal shelter while she was heavily pregnant, the poor dog was understandably confused and distressed.
She couldn’t comprehend why she was being betrayed and left alone during a time when she most desperately needed love, security, and compassionate care.
When her precious puppies finally came into the world, Joy, with an innate maternal instinct, cared for them with boundless love and devotion. Her deepest hope was that each of her babies would find loving forever families who would cherish them and never abandon them, ensuring they would know only kindness and stability.
Miraculously, Joy’s wish came true for her offspring, and all of her beloved babies were successfully adopted into caring homes. Following this, Joy herself was transferred to the Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary in Kansas, a place of refuge where she held onto the hopeful belief that she, too, would eventually find someone special who would open their heart and home to her, offering the unconditional love she so deserved.
A Sanctuary of Love: Joy’s Bright Personality Shines
The dedicated staff and compassionate volunteers at the sanctuary were immediately captivated by Joy and her undeniably adorable and endearing personality. They found immense pleasure in taking her for leisurely walks, and her joyful spirit never failed to bring a smile to their faces, brightening their days.
Joy’s human friends at the sanctuary were absolutely certain that it wouldn’t be long before she stole the heart of some lucky adopter. She possessed all the wonderful qualities that potential families typically look for in a canine companion: a sweet disposition, a playful nature, and an abundance of affection to give.
“Miss Joy loves going for long walks, playing in the yard, and collecting all the stuffies! She is very playful, sweet, and full of personality. Little tiny bestie is the best companion anyone could ever ask for,” the Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary lovingly wrote in a Facebook post, highlighting Joy’s many charms.
Thanks to the consistent love, gentle care, and positive attention she received from the amazing staff, Joy quickly adapted to life at the sanctuary and began to allow herself to dream of the day she would finally meet her forever family, the people who would see her for the special dog she truly was.
In the beginning of her stay at the sanctuary, Joy’s heart was undoubtedly filled with a hopeful anticipation for a brighter tomorrow, a future where she would finally experience the security and unwavering love of a permanent home.
Fading Hope: Overlooked Despite Her Sweetness
However, as time continued to pass and she was repeatedly overlooked by potential adopters, a shadow of disappointment began to dim Joy’s initial optimism. The days turned into weeks, the weeks into months, and the months stretched into years, yet her forever family remained elusive.
Over the past several years, Joy has experienced the temporary comfort of various foster homes, each offering a brief respite from shelter life. While she adores human companionship and forms strong bonds with the people who care for her, Joy has a somewhat discerning nature when it comes to her four-legged companions. She exhibits a clear preference for larger dogs, like herself, rather than smaller ones, a quirk that perhaps further narrowed her pool of potential adoptive families.
Despite the challenges she faced, Joy has remarkably overcome her hearing impairment by diligently mastering sign language for a range of important phrases, demonstrating her intelligence and adaptability. She understands and responds to signs for “I love you,” “good girl,” “sit,” “no,” “leave it,” “peanut butter” (a clear favorite!), “walk,” “drink,” and “eat,” showcasing her strong desire to connect with humans.
Sadly, despite being such a well-behaved and affectionate dog, nobody had yet expressed a genuine interest in meeting her, leaving the dedicated team at the sanctuary puzzled and disheartened.
An Unwavering Spirit: Waiting for Her Forever Family
As Joy patiently watched her fellow doggy friends leave the sanctuary one by one, often nestled securely in the arms of their happy new humans, a natural question began to form in her gentle heart: why hadn’t anyone chosen her yet?
Her loving friends at the sanctuary do their best to comfort Joy, constantly reassuring her that her forever family will arrive in their own time, that the perfect match is still out there waiting to find her.
