Tour guide Styne Jacobsen and tourists witness a clash between a lone lion and a herd of hippos in Kruger National Park, South Africa, latest sightings Reported on March 14. While driving across a river, Jacobson noticed unusual behavior from the hippos. They became more and more agitated and began to circle a stone unhappily.

Using binoculars, Jacobson spotted a male lion stranded on a rock in the middle of the river. Lions are not good at swimming and often dare not go into the water. So this kind of sight is really rare. Suddenly, a huge hippo came to attack. The lion had no choice but to jump into the water. Despite being chased by another hippo in the pack, the lion narrowly escaped and swam back to shore.

Jacobson later learned it was a young roaming lion and not a member of a local pride. Male lions usually guard a single territory, but young males will roam around until they establish their own territory. Apparently, the lion had strayed into hippo territory by mistake.

The African lion (Panthera leo) is mainly distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. This is the only feline in the world that lives in groups. The lioness is the primary hunter, preying on antelope, zebra, wildebeest and many other mammals. Male lions protect the territory of the entire herd.

Hippos are one of the most aggressive animals in the world and are at the top of Africa’s dangerous fauna. A hippo’s jaws can crush a 3-meter-long crocodile. Despite its large body and short four legs, hippos can easily accelerate to 48 km/h and surpass humans. As the third heaviest land mammal, a male hippopotamus can weigh up to 1.8 tons and grow up to 5 meters in length.
