A Heartbreaking Surrender
Eight-year-old Axel, an American Staffordshire Terrier, is currently residing at the West Milford Animal Shelter Society in New Jersey. His journey to the shelter was a heart-wrenching one, stemming from his owner’s deteriorating health. Forced to make the difficult decision to rehome Axel, the owner, who unfortunately went blind, hoped to find a loving environment for their beloved companion.
Volunteer Richard Adamonis describes Axel as a “terrific boy” with a gentle nature. Despite the challenges he has faced, Axel has shown remarkable resilience and is eager to find his forever home. Adamonis emphasizes the need for a quiet environment for Axel to thrive, highlighting his potential to become a loyal and devoted companion.
The Reality of Rehoming
Axel’s situation is unfortunately not unique. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), pet problems are the leading cause of rehoming, accounting for nearly half of rehomed dogs and cats. Behavioral issues, health concerns, and unexpected size increases are among the primary reasons cited by owners.
However, Axel’s case differs significantly. He is described as a calm and cautious dog who simply requires a patient and understanding owner. While he may be timid initially, Axel is believed to form strong bonds with those he trusts.
A New Beginning for Axel
After a challenging period at the shelter, Axel has begun to adjust to his surroundings. The shelter staff has been working diligently to provide him with the care and attention he needs. They emphasize the importance of finding a home without other pets or children to ensure Axel’s well-being.
With Axel entering his senior years, the shelter is seeking a patient and loving owner who can provide him with a peaceful and comfortable environment. An “empty nest” home is considered ideal, allowing Axel to enjoy his golden years without the added stress of a bustling household.
Extending Axel’s Lifespan
Given Axel’s age, finding ways to optimize his health and longevity is crucial. Dr. Pete Wedderburn, a veterinarian, offers valuable advice for dog owners. A high-quality diet, supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids, can bolster the immune system and support joint health. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys is essential for cognitive well-being. Regular dental care is vital to prevent various health issues. Finally, minimizing stress by avoiding kennels and opting for pet sitters during travel can significantly improve a dog’s overall quality of life.
Axel’s story is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by many animals in shelters. With patience, love, and the right environment, this gentle soul can find a happy and fulfilling life.
