From Abandonment to Rescue
Salem’s life took a difficult turn when her family decided they no longer wanted her, leaving her with a neighbor in rural Mississippi. Unlike many dogs who enjoy the comfort and love of a permanent home, Salem found herself suddenly without a family. Fortunately, the neighbor, wanting the best for her, contacted Happy Tails Canine Rescue (HTCR), an organization based in Memphis, Tennessee. The rescue team quickly took Salem into their care and soon discovered her sweet and gentle nature. She was the epitome of a perfect companion, prompting a flood of adoption applications when the rescue announced her availability on social media.
A Shocking Discovery During Pre-Adoption Checkup
Before matching Salem with a family, the rescue ensured she received necessary medical attention. Upon arrival, she was found to be malnourished, had an injured foot, and was suffering from parasites. After weeks of treatment, Salem was finally ready for adoption. A wonderful family stepped forward, eager to give her a loving home. However, during a pre-adoption checkup, a shocking discovery was made: Salem was pregnant. This revelation surprised everyone, as Salem did not appear to have a visibly large belly.
An Even Bigger Surprise: A Singleton Puppy
The surprise of Salem’s pregnancy was only the beginning. When the veterinarian performed an X-ray to determine the number of puppies, they announced even more unexpected news: Salem was carrying only one puppy—a single, large pup. This rare occurrence, known as a singleton pregnancy, was a surprise to both the rescue and Salem’s new family. A DNA test later revealed that Salem was not the Aussie Shepherd-Border Collie mix they had initially suspected but was in fact 95% Great Pyrenees, explaining the unusual size of her single pup. Despite the potential complications associated with singleton pregnancies, Salem’s puppy was born perfectly healthy.
A Happy Ending for Mother and Daughter
Salem’s single puppy, named Astrid, was welcomed with love by both her mother and her new family. Salem nursed Astrid, providing her with the necessary care and nourishment. The rescue announced that both Salem and Astrid would be spayed and that Astrid would eventually be available for adoption through their organization. Salem’s journey, from abandonment to unexpected motherhood and finally to a loving home, is a testament to the resilience of animals and the dedication of rescue organizations. Her story is filled with surprises and heartwarming moments, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, happy endings are possible.
