It was truly heart wrenching to witness; a German Shepherd found wandering on the streets of Detroit accompanied by her beloved stuffed animal.
Now there is relief as this beautiful dog has been rescued and is safe and sound.
According to a report, by FOX 2 Detroit concerned locals spotted the dog roaming the streets. Interestingly despite being female they affectionately named her “Nicholas.” Neighbors shared that she had become homeless after her owners demise.
As news about the dogs plight spread several local organizations such as It Is Pawzable Dog Training, South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, Sugar Mutts Dog Grooming and Almost Home Animal Rescue joined forces to capture the dog and provide her with safety.
“It’s truly amazing how everyone comes together as a team ” expressed Katrina Weaver, owner of It Is Pawzable in an interview with FOX 2.
Fortunately their rescue efforts proved successful. Home No Kill Rescue announced on May 3rd that they had successfully captured the dog and she was now under their care. In light of her gender difference from the name given by locals they decided to rename “Nicholas” as “Nikki.”
“From this point only positive things await Nikki for a life!” wrote the rescue organization, on Facebook.
“Thank you for all the support. It’s wonderful to know that Nikki will finally have a home!”
However there is a complication; Nikki has been diagnosed with heartworm, which means she will need four weeks of treatment. Now she is taking it easy receiving medication and going on walks while on a leash. Once she fully recovers the rescue organization will start searching for her perfect home.
In the meantime rest assured that Nikki is, in hands.. Yes she still has her cherished stuffed toy by her side ❤️
We’re incredibly relieved and happy that this beautiful dog is safe and secure now accompanied by her beloved stuffed animal ❤️ Lets hope Nikki recovers fully and finds an amazing new home soon!
